On a sunny but wet weekend in early summer we made the drive out to the Brecon Beacons to take on one of the classic waterfall routes Wales has to offer. After getting lost and taking directions from a farmer on a small tractor, we eventually found the starting point. A quiet car park tucked at the end of a narrow country lane.
For the first thirty minutes you are completely surrounded by trees, the constant sound of running water filling the air. There is a moment where you start to wonder whether you have somehow missed the path to the waterfalls entirely. You have not. The route is well marked throughout with wooden signposts and there is no real chance of going wrong.
Each waterfall feels bigger than the last, building anticipation as you work your way through the walk. The final one is something else entirely, a gigantic curtain of water pouring over a hanging cliff. What makes it so extraordinary is the underhang. You can actually walk beneath it. It is treacherously loud, the humidity hits you immediately and you will feel the splash of large water droplets, but the experience is worth every second of it. The amount of space under there is genuinely surprising.
